Fortify Your Skin Because Skin Cancer Is On the Rise

Despite great advances in medical research and treatment, skin cancer is continuing to rise for all three major types of skin cancer – basal cell, squamous cell and melanoma. More people are being diagnosed with skin cancer each year than the sum of all other types of cancer.

Upwards of 90% of skin cancers are due to sun. The SUN! That includes both past sun exposure and current sun exposure. We have to remember that the sun is our “enemy” when it comes to our skin and take precautions such as avoiding the sun, wearing sunscreen, and using skincare products that can prevent more damage.

A Beautiful Reminder That May Is Skin Cancer Awareness Month

SPF, sunscreen, sun protection, however you say it, you have to wear it every day! It’s so important that the FAA and TSA just approved full size product of SPF/Sunscreen can be carried on to planes.

Shawna’s 12 Products To Fortify Against Skin Cancer

It All Starts with SPF

We all know we need physical sunscreen to help protect against damage and chemical sunscreen can be detrimental for skin health.  Zinc oxide is used for its many benefits to the skin including minimizing irritation, reducing inflammation, speeding wound healing, sealing in moisture and protecting the skin against the effects of UV rays.

My two fave sunscreens are Hale & Hush Broad Spectrum SPF and Suntegrity Natural Moisturizing Face Sunscreen.  They are great for any skin type- especially sensitive skin and are full of antioxidants that protect against future sun damage and can reduce the occurrence of skin cancer.

Hale and Hush Broad Spectrum SPF 30 is the perfect combination of sun, sensitivity and age defense.  Natural Zinc Oxide provides chemical-free broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection at the surface while a specialized amino acids and algae blends provides UV protection at the cellular level.

Suntegrity Moisturizing Face Sunscreen is a rich chemical-free sunscreen that offers protection against damaging UVA & UVB rays. Infused with antioxidants while the zinc-oxide protects the skin from the damaging UVA and UVB rays, as well as reduces the appearance of redness.

Prevention is the key against sun damage and skin cancer.  Antioxidants applied to your skin can act as an extra type of protection against damaging free radicals formed from sun exposure. Layering these products under your sunscreen gives you a reservoir of helpful antioxidants. Antioxidants can improve cell function, increase collagen production, improve elasticity, create healthier skin cells and reduce sun damage

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is a warrior ingredient that fights off free radicals and preventing future sun damage. As we age, the body becomes less capable of producing enough collagen; this leads to fine lines, wrinkles, scars, and sunspots.  Vitamin A stimulates fibroblasts to increase the production of healthy collagen and elastin. There are different forms of Vitamin A derivatives and products that can be used to fight the signs of photoaging.

I love Hale & Hush Rare Retinal Serum due to the fact that it uses retinaldehyde and has the ability to absorb quickly, does not cause irritation and can be used on any skin type.

Vitamin C
Vitamin C is the most powerful antioxidant that works against free radicals. Vitamin C during the morning routine as it helps to protect your skin from oxidation and sun damage.  Vitamin C not only heals the damage done by UV rays, but also improves the skin texture, and inflammatory skin conditions.  It is a strong antioxidant that helps fade hyperpigmentation, impede melanin production, and combat photoaging.

Shira Organics- Pure Revitalizing Pomegranate Serum contains antioxidant-rich ellagic acid and polyphenols to support healthy skin tone and texture and prevent cell damage.

Le Mieux Vita-C Serum
All the goodies are right here.  Concentrated serum is enriched with 2 forms of vitamin C. vitamin E and B vitamins (niacinamide) to restore a healthy glow, balance uneven tone, and soften roughness.

Vitamin E
Vitamin E provides protection from UV rays and induced sun damage.  The combination of UV absorptive and antioxidant properties of vitamin E can repair and rejuvenate skin damage. This powerful antioxidant is widely recognized for its ability to moisturize and hydrate dehydrated skin. It may also reduce photodamage, stabilizes skin barrier and decreases the risk of skin cancer.

One of my favorites masks is the Le Mieux-Hyaluronic Shea Mask is loaded with antioxidants and vitamin E for deep conditioning, prevents water loss, dryness, and roughness.

Green Tea
The best proven antioxidants for reducing skin cancer risk are green tea polyphenols and their potential photoprotective properties. These properties can effectively aid in preventing melanoma, non-melanoma cancer and photoaging. It is a powerful antioxidant that fights free radicals and protects the skin from harsh UV rays and manage UVB-induced oxidation.

My favorite toner for my acne clients is Shira Organics-Pure Green Tea Toner.  This toner is packed with phytochemicals for acne-prone skin and sun damage protection. It minimizes inflammation, balances pH, protects against cell damage and quenches skin with rich antioxidants.

Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide)

Vitamin B3 or Niacinamide is a powerful antioxidant that improves the skin’s texture by reducing fine lines and wrinkles. It has excellent anti-inflammatory and hydrating properties, and it is often used to treat skin conditions like rosacea and acne. It is a potent powerhouse that can reduce the effects of photoaging, reduce trans epidermal water loss, and improve skin tone and texture.

Dawn Lorraine-Luscious Berry Fruit Oil Serum is replenishing and nourishing and contains niacinamide and is packed with many other antioxidants.

Resveratrol is one of the most potent antioxidants and a natural chemo-preventive agent that inhibits  cellular processes associated with tumor development, and progression with significant anti-inflammatory properties. The topical application of resveratrol can protect the skin from future photodamage.

Hale & Hush Mist Me Spritz is one of my fave products containing resveratrol. It is also packed with other antioxidants, is anti-inflammatory, and protects against environmental damage.

Turmeric (Curcumin)
Turmeric is packed with antioxidants and vitamins B6 and C, as well as manganese and potassium. One of the reasons why turmeric is often used for treating cuts and burns is because it contains an antioxidant known as curcumin. This polyphenol antioxidant helps to fight free radicals, reduce skin inflammation, and protect against photoaging.

I love Shira Organics- Pure Turmeric Moisturizer for my clients. It is a natural lightening and anti-inflammatory agent that protects the deeper layers of the skin against aging.

Lastly, Let’s Talk Inflammation
There is scientific evidence that inflamed skin is depleted of antioxidants, and thus more prone to skin cancer. If there is inflammation from skin irritations, rashes, sensitivities, rosacea, acne or other skin conditions, it can block the absorption of some of these awesome ingredients that will help prevent skin damage and skin cancer.

My two faves for fighting inflammation are Le Mieux O² Calming Gel and Hale & Hush Hush Hydrate Gel.

Le Mieux O² Calming Gel is a soothing gel is antioxidant-enriched and has an advanced moisture complex that intensely hydrates while softening skin for a healthy-looking complexion.

Hale & Hush – Hush Hydrate is a delicate and moisturizing formula chock full of botanical extracts, antioxidants, and skilled inflammation fighters.
