Growth Factors In Skincare – Are They Key to Enduring Client Results

Growth Factors in Skincare – When we talk about advanced aesthetics, we’re talking about delivering results that last, results that are a testament to our expertise and strategic planning. The gap between a successful in-office treatment and sustained client satisfaction lies entirely within the retail strategy.

Today, I want to pull back the curtain on my highly specific, non-negotiable protocol for integrating one of the industry’s most powerful actives: Growth Factors (GFs). This isn’t just about selling products; it’s about optimizing the cellular environment to maximize the clinical efficacy and longevity of client results for both the client and our practice.

Technology for Skin Longevity: The New Pathway for Lifelong Skin Vitality

Skin longevity isn’t just a wellness trend—it’s becoming the lens through which today’s medical and spa skincare professionals design treatment plans, choose technologies, and guide patients through their long-term skin health journeys. The new frontier of skincare is rooted in the understanding that when we improve cellular function, we improve everything: resilience, vibrancy, structure, and the skin’s ability to age slowly and gracefully.

Decoding the Science: The Critical Role of Growth Factors in Skincare and Messenger Proteins

Growth Factors in skincare are essential cellular communicators, naturally occurring signaling proteins that regulate cell growth, differentiation, and tissue repair. Their efficacy in advanced skincare is based on their ability to bind to specific receptor sites on fibroblasts and keratinocytes, initiating a cascade of intracellular activity that stimulates cellular proliferation and matrix synthesis. Our topical application of bio-engineered (recombinant) GFs is designed to interrupt the age-related decline and aggressively promote regeneration.

6 Key Growth Factors In Skincare

Understanding the primary function of each regenerative agent allows for strategic, results-driven formulation choices.

1 Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF): Best for Surface Texture and PIH. This is the “Proliferation Signal,” focused on the epidermis. Professional Caveat: We reserve EGF-rich formulas for improving surface texture and mitigating post-inflammatory acne scarring, avoiding application over severe, nodular, or cystic active lesions to ensure optimal healing without risk.

2 Fibroblast Growth Factors (FGF): Best for Firmness and Scar Depth. This is the “Dermal Synthesis Signal.” FGF targets fibroblasts in the dermis, commanding them to increase the production of Type I and III collagen and elastin. This is indispensable during and after modalities like Microchanneling where the goal is deep dermal remodeling.

the Fresno area and beyond. Over the years, she has expanded her knowledge by studying advanced skincare and holistic therapies from California to New York City, as well as Alaska, Hawaii, and Japan. In 2013, she founded Trin Spa Skin & Wellness, a solo luxury skin boutique dedicated to skin health, energetic balance, and overall well-being.

Her expertise and dedication earned her two award-winning recognitions at The Skin Games (TSG), and in 2017, she was invited to become an educator for California Skincare Supply (CSS). By 2020, she advanced to the role of lead judge for TSG, further solidifying her influence in the industry. In 2024, she was once again invited to judge, and in 2025, she was hand-selected as one of the featured speakers for the inaugural Awaken Esthetics Retreat. There, she shared her groundbreaking perspective on the role of energy in the esthetician treatment room, teaching how subtle energy practices can elevate client results and deepen professional presence. This milestone also marked the launch of Deva Moon Academy, her newest educational platform designed to empower practitioners with advanced training in crystals, sound, chakra healing, and energetic integration.

3 Transforming Growth Factors (TGF): Best for Post-Procedure Healing and Quality Repair. The “Remodeling Signal.” I prioritize TGF for intensive post-care, especially after deep chemical peels, as it supports proper collagen organization.

4 Platelet-Derived Growth Factors (PDGF): Best for Tissue Atrophy and Chronic Damage. The “Tissue Repair Signal.” PDGF is the primary Growth Factor released by platelets. It is used in aesthetics via two sources: 1) Autologous PRP/PRF (your own blood) for advanced in-office treatments, reserved for medical service providers, and 2) Topical serums containing recombinant PDGF (lab-engineered) for stable, consistent home-care application, safe and in scope for licensed estheticians. PDGF stimulates the proliferation of repair cells and is key in angiogenesis.

5 Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF): Best for Severe Photodamage, Deep Scarring, and Poorly Circulated Skin. The “Circulation Signal.” VEGF stimulates angiogenesis (new blood vessels). We utilize it to ensure the deep tissue remodeling of scarred or photodamaged areas has the necessary vascular infrastructure to sustain repair.

6 GHK (Copper Peptide Complex): Best for Activating Native GF Production and Sustained Synthesis. This critical GF Signaling Agent is known to upregulate the expression of genes involved in the production of the skin’s own essential growth factors, including FGF and VEGF. Although this is technically a peptide, it does activate GF production, so I thought it was appropriate to touch on as it’s a great ingredient for estheticians to utilize.

Strategic Note: Active Acne and Growth Factors in Skincare

When managing active, inflammatory acne (pustules, nodules, cysts), a critical distinction must be made between highly mitogenic Growth Factors (like EGF) and regenerative agents like PDRN. Because Growth Factors in Skincare send direct, powerful signals for cellular proliferation, professionals exercise caution and generally avoid applying them directly over severely inflamed or infected lesions to prevent exacerbating uncontrolled cellular activity. Conversely, PDRN (which is not a GF but is a nucleic acid fragment) is often the preferred choice during active breakouts. PDRN works by offering essential anti-inflammatory support and providing the necessary building blocks (nucleotides) for damaged tissue. This mechanism encourages high-quality, rapid, and controlled healing of the lesion, making it superior for mitigating the scarring (sequelae) caused by acute inflammation without the theoretical risk associated with intense GF proliferation signals.

Professional Disclosure: Growth Factors in Skincare and Cancer Conversation

The fear that topical Growth Factors in skincare can cause cancer is a myth often fueled by misunderstanding. Topical GFs do not cause cancer. They are large proteins that work on surface receptors and signal existing cells. However, because they are mitogenic (they tell cells to multiply), the professional standard requires absolute caution:

 * Non-Negotiable Skin Analysis: This underscores why a thorough skin analysis is mandatory before beginning any advanced protocol especially a GF protocol. Any suspicious lesion or persistent non-healing area must be noted.

 * Oncology Protocol: If a client has a current cancer diagnosis or history of skin cancer, Growth Factors are out of the question without explicit medical clearance. Oncology skin training is a vital specialization that teaches estheticians how to safely treat compromised skin in these clients, focusing on barrier repair and soothing modalities, not proliferation.

*Always refer a client with any suspicious lesion to a dermatologist for medical clearance before proceeding with GF application or aggressive regenerative treatments.

The Immediate Imperative: Growth Factors in Skincare in the Treatment Room

In-office, Growth Factors in Skincare are non-negotiable post-procedure necessities. We utilize highly concentrated, sterile, recombinant topical serums delivered to the wound site.

 * Nano Infusion and Microchanneling: We drive these GF-rich solutions directly into the micro-channels created by the device. This strategy dramatically enhances the penetration and efficacy (the “push”) of these proteins, ensuring they reach the target cells with maximum concentration, thus amplifying the collagen induction cascade and reducing the inflammatory phase.

 * Post-Peel Healing (Live Application): After aggressive resurfacing, the live application of GFs acts as the most powerful cellular accelerant, rapidly reducing erythema and mitigating inflammatory mediators, which is critical for mitigating post-inflammatory sequelae.

The Strategic Slow Roll: My Three-Month Retail Protocol

This is the core of my longevity philosophy: I strictly do not retail a potent Growth Factor serum to a new client on their first visit.

Why? Because again, GFs are mitogenic, they signal cells to proliferate. If a client, especially one new to advanced skin care, currently using subpar products, has skin comprised of senescent, metabolically sluggish cells (what I call the “stagnant zombie cells”) due to chronic photodamage or poor compliance…. introducing a potent GF product immediately risks multiplying or perpetuating a sub-optimal cellular phenotype. This is poor strategic planning and compromises the final result.

The danger isn’t harm, but diminished efficacy, especially when the client has a limited budget and cannot commit to an extensive, advanced in-office treatment series. Selling a potent GF serum prematurely will lead to results that are significantly slower than expected. To keep the faith and trust of the client in the esthetician and the results, I find this method offers more longevity than simply selling a client a GF serum because they read in Vogue or saw on TikTok that it’s the holy grail for aging and repair.

My initial three months (or 2-3 advanced sessions) are dedicated to Cellular Fitness and Priming. The client is placed on an advanced protocol using active ingredients to repair and activate collagen synthesis or calm inflammation (such as overproduction of melanocytes or a compromised barrier). This protocol specifically targets natural GF reproduction signaling and barrier repair. This is all addressed before introducing topical growth factors into the skin.

The Payoff: When topical GFs or advanced treatments are introduced, they will signal healthy cells to proliferate versus stagnant zombie cells. This strategic timing ensures the client is investing in a powerful amplifier that is strengthening the new, improved cellular structure, not just maintaining the old damage. This professional, strategic phasing is what drives true, measurable, and enduring client results and, in my opinion, makes the results longer lasting.
