Peptides! We hear about them; we use them, and we know the importance and the efficacy they can have on the skin. But what are they? How do they work? How do they improve the efficacy of a skincare product?
Putting the “Pep” in Peptides
Peptides are molecules consisting of short strings of amino acids (approximately between 2 to 50 strings), linked by peptide bonds. Whereas longer chains of peptides form proteins.
Due to the larger size of protein molecules, they cannot be appropriately absorbed in the skin. Peptides, on the other hand, being smaller, can easily penetrate the skin, offering a range of skin care benefits. This attribute is one of the reasons peptides are skincare stars.

Peptides Do The Work
When peptides are formulated in skincare, those products improve multiple skin issues. Peptides act as messengers. They work at the cellular level; each having their own qualities that target specific actions in the body. The body recognizes the peptide messenger as a signal to perform a specific function, often a “healing” action.
The specific action is determined by the sequence and length of amino acids in a peptide. There are various types of peptides including: Dipeptides (two amino acids), Oligopeptides (three to ten amino acids), and polypeptides (more than ten amino acids). The peptide’s role can often be altered to amend their function and signals.
Let’s take an example we’re all familiar with – aging. As we age (even prematurely aging), we lose collagen and elastin leading to wrinkling and sagging skin. When applying skincare with peptides, you introduce the peptide’s qualities onto the skin. This acts as if it is “tricking” the skin into thinking there has been an injury/wound. And on that note…
More Than Anti-Aging
While peptides products are commonly known for fighting the signs of aging, peptides are just as effective and beneficial in addressing other skin concerns. There are a multitude of peptides, with each having their own function, playing a specific role in the care of skin – and not all of them for anti-aging! Peptides can help ease inflammation, improve skin hydration, calm redness, help protect from damaging environmental aggressors and so much more! Let’s find out…
Talking Peptides
So, depending on the peptide, the signal it gives addresses specific skin reactions such as helping hydrate, smooth the skin, decrease wrinkles, firm, and brighten the skin, and help with hyperpigmentation and sensitive skin concerns.
