Why Vitamin C and Niacinamide Are Better Together

Brighter, smoother, firmer, and ultimately younger-looking skin are the highlights of the skin benefits possible when the powerhouse antioxidant ingredients, Vitamin C and Niacinamide, are used in unison or more efficiently, brought together in a single formula. In the past, it was believed that Vitamin C and Niacinamide should not be combined because each ingredient would cancel out the other, or worse, it could cause skin irritation. Research and development have since debunked this misconception. Not only do each of these Vitamin ingredient rockstars independently provide a plethora of anti-aging benefits for the skin and overall wellness but synergistically, the potential for achieving transformative results naturally, is maximized.

Vitamin C

The most common form of Vitamin C is L-ascorbic acid which is the most native in the human body. Our bodies cannot synthesize it on their own,  it is typically supplied through diet, supplementation, and topical-care. This is also true for niacinamide. Although L-ascorbic acid is an active form of Vitamin C, its molecular structure is extremely unstable. Exposure to the mildest of factors, like air, light, or heat, would instantly compromise its efficacy.

Fortunately, with modern science, new technologies have allowed us to be able to actually have real topical options of stable Vitamin C, in order to reap the benefits of it in skincare, and not just naively enjoy the idea of it on a product label.  Some of the most potent and, more importantly, stable forms of Vitamin C are Ethyl Ascorbic Acid, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Ascorbyl Palmitate, and Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate. What’s even cooler is that traditionally Vitamin C was known as a purely water-soluble, hydrophilic, ingredient, but the effective Vitamin C ingredients mentioned above, are oil-soluble.

Vitamin C boosts collagen protein formation, which in turn, promotes cell turnover. This, combined with the tyrosinase inhibiting action of Vitamin C, which suppresses melanin and restricts it from surfacing, enables brightening, texture smoothing and skin tone correcting results, often achieved after at least four weeks of consistent use.

Niacinamide

With many similarities to Vitamin C, Niacinamide, also known as Vitamin B3 or Nicotinamide, among other names, has impeccable antioxidant properties that provide protection from cell-damaging free radicals. As an intensive anti-inflammatory ingredient, it reduces the harmful immune-suppressing effect caused by UV exposure, which ultimately counters accelerated cell degradation and premature skin aging. Like Vitamin C, Niacinamide helps regenerate proteins, like collagen, but it also encourages the production of ceramide lipids, essential to maintaining a healthy moisture barrier for the skin.

Vitamin B3 has been celebrated as a natural fine lines and wrinkle reducer, but also as a great option to minimize the appearance of enlarged pores and helpful in the treatment of acne breakouts.

Vitamin C + Niacinamide Together

Vitamin C and Niacinamide when working simultaneously, complement each other. A formula enriched with both ingredients can be expected to enhance cellular regeneration and improve hyperpigmentation, redness, dehydration, texture, tone, and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. To add, it would even serve as a remedy to help improve broken capillaries because of its blood vessel-strengthening action.
