How The Pharmacist Turned Esty Uses Medical Training To Choose Brands

Christal George is the pharmacist turned esthetician who uses her medical education to understand the science of ingredient technology when investigating brands that she carries in her spa. When she was looking for a brand of skin care to treat compromised skin, she loved what she saw in Hale & Hush.

Thanks to Hale & Hush for sponsoring this content so that we can bring you the story of Christal George.

Meet Christal George, Hale & Hush Feature Skin Care Professional

My name is Dr. Christal George. I am a proud native Houstonian living and thriving in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. I attended and graduated from Xavier University of Louisiana with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree (and I have been a licensed pharmacist for 18 years.)

I became a licensed esthetician and owner of The Skin Design Studio located in Arlington, Texas in 2022.

Christal is a solo esthetician in her boutique spa with two rooms specializing in multicultural skincare. I am passionate about science, self care and all things beauty.

For leisure, I enjoy playing in makeup, concerts/ live music, and trying out new beauty products. However, I get the most joy out of spending time with my husband and our two sassy(yet sweet) daughters.

Why Christal George Left Pharmacy to Become an Esthetician

It’s not every day you hear of a pharmacist transitioning to the world of professional skin care. So we asked Christal what made her make the switch.

“Like many others, the pandemic changed both my life and my perspective. I realized that I was no longer happy or fulfilled in my career. To make matters worse, I lost two aunts and an uncle within eight months. These losses reminded me that life is too short to spend it feeling miserable. As a woman of faith, I began praying for guidance on what else I should be doing. I’ve always had a passion for makeup and skincare, and one day while receiving a facial, it struck me—I could do this.” Christal George

How Being a Doctor of Pharmacy Helps Christal Understand Skincare Ingredient Technology

The amount of scientific education required to become a Doctor of Pharmacy is immense. It requires years and years of education centered around science, anatomy, physiology and so much more. L+A asked Christal how her medical education helps her as an esthetician.

“Yes, my degree in pharmacy has been incredibly helpful in my transition to esthetics. Having completed graduate-level courses in anatomy and physiology, I gained a deep understanding of the science behind skin and how various chemicals interact with it. My background in pharmacy also gives me insight into different diseases and conditions, such as diabetes, PCOS, and lupus, and how they impact the skin, along with the medications used to treat these conditions. Understanding concepts like pH, molecular weight, encapsulation, and other delivery systems allows me to serve my clients more effectively.” Christal George

How Christal George Incorporates Hale & Hush Into Her Treatments

Christal told L+A, “My most popular treatment is my 90-minute Signature Facial, which includes LED therapy, aromatherapy, a micro peel, and a relaxing shoulder and neck massage. However, chemical peels are also very popular. I use Hale & Hush alongside Face Reality and Sorella Apothecary in my treatment room.

I carry the full Hale & Hush product line and often begin my facials with their gentle cleanser, Quiet Wash. Since I see so many clients with damaged skin barriers, I regularly use the Hush Hydrate Gel and Remedy Rehab Oil in my treatments.”

Christal told L+A that “Quiet Wash is one of my client’s favorite products in addition to Soothe Essence Serum, and Clear Future Toner. For me,  the Hale & Hush Soothe Essence serum is bae. My clients love that the Hale & Hush products are highly effective, gentle, and budget-friendly.”

A Focus on Multicultural Skincare Is Her Passion

In Christal George’s bio, she indicates that her business has a  focus on multicultural skincare. So we asked Christal, why this is so important to her and asked her if you would tell us about this so that we can share her thoughts with the L+A Community, here’s what she had to say.

“Over  40% of the American population is now considered “skin of color,” which includes Black, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, and mixed-race individuals. This growing diversity highlights the need for skincare professionals who understand the unique needs of different skin types. However, only about 8% of licensed estheticians in the U.S. are Black, which underscores the importance of representation in the skincare industry. At The Skin Design Studio, we’re proud to specialize in providing personalized care for women and men of color. Our mission is to address the unique needs of our community and ensure that every individual receives the best possible care, tailored to their skin’s specific characteristics and needs.

To better serve our community, I’ve invested in advanced training from two of the leading experts in skincare for people of color, Pamela Springer and Joelle Lee. Their pioneering work has shaped my understanding of how our skin differs from other types, and how those differences require a more nuanced approach.” Christal George

Christal’s Advice to Other Estheticians

“I would encourage any esthetician considering partnering with Hale & Hush to go for it! It’s an investment you won’t regret. The products work well with other lines, and the education is top-notch. The price point is unbeatable, and their Facebook group is incredibly supportive, free from the cattiness and judgment often found in such communities.” Christal George

Christal’s Esty-Bestie Told Her About Hale & Hush

Whenever L+A interviews an esthetician, one of our go-to questions to ask is how they learned about the brand that’s featuring them. We asked Christal how she learned about Hale & Hush.

“I first heard about the Hale & Hush brand from a fellow sugaring professional, who insisted that I needed the Hush Hydrate Gel and Relief Bio Powder in my back bar for Brazilian treatments. They swore it was the best for reducing redness and irritation. I tried the products on a good friend’s face after she was unable to tolerate cleansers and serums from any of the other lines that I carried. I slowly added more of their products to my backbar and continued to be impressed. In fact, I am always reaching for my go-to Hale & Hush product, the  Hush Hydrate Mask in my treatment room.” Christal George

Christal George on Hale & Hush Training and Education

One of the key areas L+A likes to talk to estheticians about is a brand’s training and customer service. We love it when brands have high-quality products, however, we like to see quality backed up with training and service.

L+A asked, “Can you tell us about the training and customer service that you receive from Hale & Hush?”

Christal told us, “They have some of the best educators, and I’ve greatly benefited from their advanced courses on sensitive skin, acne, facial massage, and social media. They offer different courses monthly so I can really nerd out when needed.

They have the best customer service, hands down. I can’t think of another company where the owner regularly shares her phone number. Shawna, Melissa, and Krisstan are incredibly helpful if you encounter any challenges. As a small business owner, I also appreciate their quick and affordable shipping.”
