What Are Sustainable Beauty Standards
When it comes to the new millennium marketing of beauty, sustainability is a huge buzz word. Dictionary.com tells us that Sustain means, “strengthen or support physically or mentally.” From that we have to ask, what is the beauty industry strengthening or supporting with the phrase sustainable beauty?
Seems like we have another question as opposed to an answer.
It’s become “understood” that sustainability is referring to the environment. Standards for the beauty industry to “strengthen or support physically or mentally” the environment.
Sustainabile Beauty Products We Love
We wanted to explore the skincare industry to find brands that were offering products that in some way supported sustainability. What we learned while doing research is that it’s much more than just the product. Sustainability includes, the packaging of the product along with may facets of the business operation.
We found The Sustainable Beauty Network that offers some great information on sustainable beauty standards.
In addition to using environmentally friendly ingredients, there are many dimensions to being sustainable. Are eco-friendly packaging and designs being used? How green are the internal operations, distribution and marketing practices?
One Brand Commited To Sustainable Beauty Practices
Dawn Lorraine Conscious Skincare is a brand that showcases sustainablity practices in several areas. She uses glass and metal components whenver possible versus plastic.
The company website states
“As a spa professional for more than 20 years, and a passionate advocate for sustainability in the skin-care industry, I have strived to create a truly high-performance, eco-friendly line that will help you and your clients achieve radiant, healthy skin – naturally…..
A series of life-changing events, and my growing concern about the impact of my industry on the planet, led to a major turning point in my practice. As an Esthetician in the treatment room, I wanted results for my clients. As an environmentalist I wanted organic. I looked extensively for a product that was organic and gave my clients the results they desired, and when I couldn’t find it I embarked on a journey that led to the creation of Dawn Lorraine, Conscious Skincare. Dawn Lorraine is an organic brand dedicated to Skin Care Professionals who want to make a difference, both for their clients and the earth.”
We loved how they celebrated Founder, Dawn Lorraine’s Birthday – with a sustainabilty focused fund raiser.
Where To Start Sustainable Beauty Practices
While it is difficult to implement all these measures at once, taking a holistic approach that addresses several key issues will have the most positive social and environmental impact.
