Why Feminine Health Matters to Medical + Spa Aesthetic Professionals

For decades, menopause was spoken about in hushed tones—if at all. Referred to simply as “the change,” it often carried a vague, almost mysterious connotation. We grew up hearing about hot flashes on sitcoms, where menopause was portrayed as a punchline or a dreaded life event. I can still remember episodes where characters treated it like the end of youth, the end of beauty, or even the end of relevance.

But things are changing.

Thanks to mainstream advocates—yes, even Oprah—the conversation around menopause and feminine health is shifting into the spotlight. We’re finally seeing more open, honest discussions about how hormonal transitions impact the entire body, not just fertility.

And that matters, especially in the world of medical and spa aesthetics.

Aesthetic professionals are on the front lines of this evolution. Skin, hair, mood, sleep, metabolism, and vaginal health—every one of these can be influenced by the hormonal fluctuations that happen during perimenopause and menopause. When you understand how to support clients through these changes, you’re not just offering treatments. You’re offering empowerment, confidence, and a space where they feel seen.

This is more than skincare. This is whole-body wellness. And it’s time we treat it that way.

L+A Chats with a Menopause Expert: What We Learned from Trish at TheraGenesis

When it comes to menopause, one of the most eye-opening conversations we’ve had was with Trish from TheraGenesis. In a featured L+A article, Trish broke down how menopause doesn’t just shift hormones—it fundamentally alters how the skin functions and heals.

“As women pass through menopause, there is a decrease in estrogen and progesterone which leads to a decrease in the production of stem cells. These decreases begin to negatively impact a postmenopausal woman’s ability to recover from aggressive skin care treatments. There is also a shortening of the telomeres on the DNA strands which becomes problematic for menopausal women.”

This biological shift means that many postmenopausal clients may no longer tolerate the same treatments or active ingredients they once did—especially things like Retinol that aren’t tailored for their specific skin needs.

Trish didn’t stop at the science—she offered practical advice, too. She shared a list of treatments that should be avoided during and after menopause, and introduced protocols that are more supportive and rebuilding in nature. This kind of insight is crucial for any aesthetic professional working with mature clients.

Expert Insight: Victoria Tabak on Why Hormones Matter in Skincare Outcomes

When clients say, “That chemical peel didn’t work,” it’s easy to blame the product or protocol. But what if the real issue lies deeper—at the hormonal level?

In her editorial for L+A, skincare formulator and educator Victoria Tabak explores the critical role hormones play in the success (or failure) of treatments like chemical peels. Her perspective offers an important reminder: without understanding the client’s hormonal status, you might be missing the full picture.

“A decline in estrogen hormones sets in motion an accumulation of inactive estrogen receptors—like in the case of menopause—consequently accelerating the skin aging process.

Hormones can also change skin sensitivity levels and how quickly the skin can regenerate or heal. One example is when estrogen hormone fluctuations activate a release of histamines in the body which would set in motion the skin’s natural immune defense response. This would be expressed in the form of inflammation.”

Victoria also points out how inflammation from hormonal shifts can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), especially when melanin production increases in response to UV exposure or irritation.

The Hair Conversation: Michael Contorno on Menopause and Thinning Hair

While skin often dominates the menopause conversation in aesthetics, there’s another major shift that needs more attention: hair loss and thinning.

In an upcoming L+A May Editorial, Michael Contorno of M.A.D Skincare highlights this overlooked symptom and its growing relevance in the professional skincare space.

“One increasingly growing topic transcending multiple industries and gaining the awareness it deserves is hair loss and thinning in women during menopausal phases, including the perimenopausal phase. While the most common occurrences when thinking about the ‘change’ are hot flashes, night sweats, weight gain, and increased stress levels, it’s time to add peri- and menopause phases to the list.”

Hair thinning can be a deeply emotional experience for women—often tied to confidence and identity. For medical and spa professionals, this opens up an opportunity to take a more holistic, head-to-toe approach to care. That might include referring to a trichologist, integrating scalp treatments into service menus, or recommending supplements and topicals that support follicle health during hormonal transitions.

The takeaway? If your treatment conversations aren’t including hair health, it’s time they should be.

From Taboo to Trend: Menopause and Vaginal Wellness Are Shaping the Future of Beauty

“There is a lot of buzz today around how to care for skin as women hit menopause,” says Shiri Sarfati in her upcoming May Editorial Article for L+A. “Everything from celebrity brands like Stripes Beauty by Naomi Watts addressing skin dryness, hot flashes and vaginal care, to hair care brands like Better Not Younger focused on ‘aging’ hair, volume loss and greys—menopause is heating up the beauty segment.”

It’s true. Menopause is no longer a quiet conversation reserved for doctor’s offices. It’s taking center stage in beauty aisles, spa menus, and the media. From online platforms to luxury spas, professionals are embracing the opportunity to support women in their perimenopausal years with more than just a bikini wax.

“Vaginal wellness in-store and online are becoming more mainstream—demystifying how to care for what was typically discussed as one’s ‘privates’ and products only found at ‘sex stores,’” Sarfati continues. “Now, it’s sold front and center at big box retailers and discussed openly online and in traditional media. When Gwyneth Paltrow sold a candle called ‘This smells like my vagina,’ it went viral. But in effect, she was normalizing the conversation around vaginal health and wellness.”

That normalization is what the industry has been waiting for.

Elevating Hair Removal: Why Sugaring Belongs in the Feminine Wellness Conversation

Hair removal might not be the first thing that comes to mind when discussing menopause or feminine health—but it should be. As more women seek gentle, hormone-friendly skincare solutions during transitional life stages like pregnancy, perimenopause, and menopause, the demand for low-irritation, anti-inflammatory alternatives is growing.

from our sponsor Sugaring Source

Embracing the Sweet Side of Feminine Health

Hair removal isn’t just about aesthetics — it’s about how women feel in their skin.

A dedicated directory for proficient sugarists, educators, and high-quality sugaring brands, Sugaring Source was born from Jamie’s desire to centralize resources and raise standards in this growing category. It answers one of the most common client questions: Where do I find someone I can trust?

“Sugaring Source is like my ‘little black book’ of sugaring pros. All those that are listed are sugarists I would see myself and send my friends, family, or clients to. Because sugaring is an emerging segment of the hair removal market, there are a lot of questions about products and education. There’s also a huge need to help connect highly trained sugarists to consumers.” Jamie Renee Asare

Enter sugaring—a centuries-old technique that’s earning modern respect for its ability to deliver smooth results without compromising skin health.

“With more women seeking gentle, hormone-friendly skin solutions (especially during pregnancy, perimenopause, or menopause), sugaring’s anti-inflammatory and low-irritation benefits make it an ideal choice,” says Jamie Renee Asare, founder of Sugaring Source. “Sugaring Source is more than a directory — it’s a movement to elevate the client experience and support skilled professionals in this blossoming sector of feminine wellness.”

For estheticians looking to expand their feminine health offerings, sugaring provides a client-centered, inclusive approach to intimate care—one that aligns beautifully with today’s evolving standards in wellness, transparency, and skin sensitivity.

It’s Time to Redefine Care for the Modern Woman

Feminine health is no longer a backroom conversation—it’s front and center in wellness, beauty, and clinical aesthetics. From hormonal skin shifts and thinning hair to the rise of intimate wellness and hormone-friendly protocols, the needs of menopausal and perimenopausal clients are clear—and growing.

Medical and spa professionals have a unique opportunity to lead this conversation with education, empathy, and evidence-based solutions. By expanding service menus, integrating science-backed products, and embracing treatments that support the full spectrum of feminine wellness, we don’t just meet women where they are—we help them thrive.

Whether it’s through a vagacial, a gentle sugaring treatment, a hormone-friendly skincare plan, or a conversation that helps a client feel seen and supported, you are the future of aesthetic care.

Let’s continue to normalize, educate, and elevate. Because whole-body beauty includes every phase—and every part—of a woman’s journey.
