Jillian Wright offers sage advice to medical + spa skincare professionals.
The field of medical + spa skincare is as much an art as it is a science. A successful skincare professional must master the perfect balance between intuition and technique, creativity and structure, emotional intelligence and logical problem-solving. This unique duality is rooted in the interplay of the left and right hemispheres of the brain—a dynamic relationship that, when understood and harnessed, can elevate an aesthetic practice to unprecedented levels of success.
Your analytical ally is the left side of your brain. The left side of the brain is traditionally associated with logic, structure, and analytical thinking. For medical + spa skincare professionals, this hemisphere plays a crucial role in the operational and technical aspects of the business.
Jillian Wright’s 4 Ways the Left Brain Contributes to a Thriving Medical + Skincare Practice
- Strategic Business Planning
Budgeting, financial forecasting, and managing expenses require a structured approach. Setting profit margins, pricing services, and tracking expenses are all left-brain-dominated activities.
- Protocol Development
Designing effective treatment protocols demands attention to detail and a methodical mindset. Whether it’s curating a signature facial or implementing safety standards, the left brain ensures precision and consistency.
- Data-Driven Decision-Making
Analyzing client data, tracking appointment trends, and reviewing product sales performance are all tasks that rely on logical analysis. This data-driven insight allows medical + spa skincare professionals to optimize their offerings and enhance profitability.
- Time Management and Scheduling
The ability to organize your day, manage appointments, and streamline workflows is rooted in the left brain’s affinity for structure and order. A well-organized schedule not only improves efficiency but also enhances the client experience.
By leveraging your left brain’s strengths, you can create a stable foundation for your aesthetic practice, ensuring operational excellence and a consistent standard of care. This means your business runs like a well-oiled machine—appointments flow seamlessly, protocols are clear and repeatable, and financial health is always in check. It’s about more than just keeping things “organized”—it’s about building a dependable backbone for your business that allows you to show up for your clients with confidence and consistency. When the left brain handles the structure, you free up mental energy to focus on innovation and client connection, knowing that the operational side of your practice is solid.

Jillian Wright’s 4 Ways the Right Brain Enhances Your Practice
Your creative catalyst is the right side of your brain. The right hemisphere of the brain is the seat of creativity, intuition, and emotional intelligence. In the aesthetic industry, where clients seek not only results but also experiences, the right brain’s contributions are indispensable.
- Client Connection and Empathy
Building rapport and understanding a client’s needs requires emotional intelligence and active listening. The right brain helps you empathize with your clients, creating personalized experiences that foster trust and loyalty.
- Creative Problem-Solving
Every client’s skin is unique, and effective treatments often require innovative solutions. The right brain’s ability to think outside the box allows you to customize treatments that address individual concerns.
- Branding and Aesthetic Vision
Crafting a cohesive and visually appealing brand identity, from your logo to your treatment room design, is driven by the right brain. Your creative flair sets your practice apart in a competitive market.
- Artistry in Treatments
The act of performing treatments, from sculpting a perfect brow to creating a relaxing ambiance, is an artistic endeavor. Your right brain ensures every detail contributes to an exceptional client experience.

5 Ways to Achieve Right + Left Brain Harmony
While the left and right brains have distinct strengths, the true magic lies in integrating their abilities. Aesthetic practice thrives when logic and creativity work hand in hand. Here are practical ways to cultivate this balance:
- Invest in Professional Development
Take courses that challenge both sides of your brain. For example, a business strategy workshop will engage your left brain, while a creative marketing seminar will stimulate your right brain.
- Embrace Technology
Utilize scheduling software and data analytics tools to streamline operations (left brain) while using design apps like Canva to create visually stunning marketing materials (right brain).
- Prioritize Self-Care
Maintaining balance in your personal life reflects in your professional life. Activities like journaling (left brain) and painting (right brain) can help you stay centered and inspired.
- Collaborate and Delegate
Recognize your natural strengths and seek support for areas where you’re less confident. For example, if analytics aren’t your forte, hire an accountant, freeing you to focus on client connection and creative endeavors.
- Adopt a Holistic Approach
View your practice as an ecosystem where every element—from financials to client experiences—is interconnected. Regularly evaluate how you can harmonize structure and creativity to achieve your goals.
In a perfect world, we all would be the medical + spa skincare professional who meticulously tracks expenses and optimizes a pricing strategy to ensure profitability (left brain) while also designing signature facials that clients rave about on social media (right brain). Or the solo practitioner who uses data analytics to identify top-performing products (left brain) and hosts creative Instagram Live sessions to showcase them (right brain). But we don’t live in a perfect world.
My strength lies in the right side of my brain—I’m a visual learner, and my background in fine art fuels my creativity. The artistry of facials and the experience I provide my clients are where I thrive. But I know that running a business isn’t just about passion—it’s about strategy, structure, and making sure the numbers make sense. That’s why I surround myself with the right support, ensuring I can focus on what I do best without letting the business side become a source of stress.
I stay focused on my craft, but I also make sure my finances are in order—taxes paid, bills handled, and projections clear so I know when to invest in growth and when to save for the future. The not-so-fun, but crucial aspects of running a business can’t be ignored. I’ve learned that while I don’t have to love them, I do have to respect them. And that balance allows me to keep doing what I love while building a successful, sustainable practice.
Conclusion
When I had a global team of 42 people that ran The Indie Beauty Expo, our most talented members were those who worked from both sides of their brain. They pulled from their ability to be data-driven while also combining the creativity and passion they had for building a platform that benefited so many beauty brands from around the world. It’s something that is god-given but also a skill that needs to be nurtured and refined. Encouraging individuals to step outside their comfort zones—whether that means sharpening analytical skills or exploring creative avenues—is essential for growth. By cultivating this balance within yourself and/or your team, you can build not only a successful business but also a legacy that inspires others.
In the world of aesthetics, success isn’t just about skill or strategy—it’s about synergy. By embracing both the analytical precision of the left brain and the creative intuition of the right brain, you can build a practice that is not only profitable but also deeply fulfilling. Cultivate this hemispheric harmony, and you’ll find that your business not only grows but thrives, becoming a true reflection of your passion and purpose.
