Hydration is one of the most foundational elements of healthy, glowing skin. No matter the skin type or concern, water is essential for every process that keeps skin functioning and looking its best. As estheticians, we not only advocate for hydration in our clients’ routines but also have the privilege of incorporating hydrating practices into our treatments. Let’s explore the why and how of hydration, along with a favorite technique I use in my treatment room to elevate results and leave clients feeling pampered.

7 Medical + Spa Skincare Winter Hydration Tips
We’ve got 7 hydration suggestions for your medical or spa skincare business. For 2025 medical and spa skincare professionals can offer home care and in clinic treatments that can boost the winter hydration levels of their clients’ skin!
Why Hydration Matters
The skin barrier, or stratum corneum, plays a critical role in maintaining hydration levels. When properly hydrated, the skin barrier is strong, resilient, and able to protect against external stressors like pollution, UV radiation, and irritants. However, when hydration is lacking, the barrier becomes compromised. This can lead to:
- Increased sensitivity and redness
- Dehydration lines and a dull appearance
- An overproduction of oil in oily skin types
- Slower healing and recovery for all skin types
Many clients don’t realize the distinction between dryness and dehydration. Dry skin lacks oil, whereas dehydrated skin lacks water. This means even clients with oily or combination skin can be severely dehydrated, especially if they’re using harsh products, are exposed to drying environments, or fail to drink enough water.
The Role of Professional Treatments
As skincare professionals, we have the tools to jumpstart hydration in ways that are hard to achieve at home. Hydration treatments improve not only the skin’s water content but also its ability to retain moisture long after the session ends.
Some of my favorite methods for boosting hydration in the treatment room include:
- Incorporating a gentle exfoliation to remove dead skin cells and allow hydrating products to penetrate deeper.
- Using advanced technology like ultrasound or hydrodermabrasion to infuse serums into the skin.
- Layering products strategically, starting with lightweight hydrating formulas and sealing them in with richer creams or masks.
But one technique I swear by—and that my clients absolutely love—focuses on targeted hydration for the delicate under-eye area.
Under-Eye Hydration: A Game-Changing Technique
The skin under the eyes is thinner and more prone to dehydration than the rest of the face. It’s often the first area to show signs of stress, fatigue, or aging. That’s why giving this area extra attention in a treatment can make a world of difference.
Tiffany’s 3 Step Under-eye Hydration Technique
- Prep with a Hydrating Serum:
I start by applying a high-quality hyaluronic acid (HA) serum under the eyes. Hyaluronic acid is a hydration powerhouse, capable of holding up to 1,000 times its weight in water. It instantly plumps the skin and provides a smooth canvas for the next steps. - Layer with a Hydrating Mask:
Once the HA serum is applied, I follow with a gentle, hydrating mask. Cream-based or gel masks work well, as they help lock in the serum while delivering their own boost of hydration. - Seal with Silicone Patches:
The final touch is applying reusable silicone patches over the mask. These create a gentle occlusive barrier, preventing moisture from evaporating and encouraging deeper absorption of the products beneath.
After 10–15 minutes, I remove the patches and the mask, revealing skin that’s noticeably more hydrated, plump, and refreshed.
A Gift for Your Clients
One of the reasons I love this technique is that it’s easy to extend the benefits beyond the treatment room. Silicone patches are reusable and make an excellent gift for clients. Not only does this add value to the service, but it also gives clients a tool they can use at home to maintain their results.
Here’s how you could present it:
- After the treatment, explain the importance of hydration and how the patches can enhance their at-home routine.
- Package the patches in a small, branded bag with care instructions, making the gift feel special and personalized.
- Encourage clients to pair the patches with their favorite eye cream or serum for best results.
This small gesture helps build trust and loyalty, as clients feel I genuinely care about their skin beyond the time they spend on my table.
5 Tips For Estheticians To Use To Maximize Hydration
For my fellow estheticians, hydration treatments don’t have to be complicated or expensive to be effective. Here are a few tips to maximize hydration in your treatments:
- Educate Your Clients:
Take the time to explain why hydration is so important. Many clients think of it as an afterthought rather than a cornerstone of their routine. Educating them helps build trust and positions you as a knowledgeable professional. - Focus on Customization:
Every client’s skin is different. Some might benefit from lightweight hydration, while others need richer, more occlusive products. Tailoring your approach ensures the best results. - Invest in Multi-Use Products:
Choosing versatile hydrating products that work for various skin types can simplify your backbar and improve your cost efficiency. - Keep It Relaxing:
Hydration treatments are as much about the experience as they are about the results. Incorporate soothing techniques, like a calming facial massage or aromatherapy, to elevate the service. - Create Take-Home Opportunities:
Whether it’s reusable silicone patches, sample-sized products, or a hydration-focused guide, giving clients something to take home keeps the treatment fresh in their minds and encourages them to stay on top of their routine.
Hydration Is for Everyone
Hydration is the great equalizer in skincare. No matter the age, skin type, or concern, every client can benefit from a boost of moisture. As estheticians, it’s our job to demystify hydration and make it accessible, enjoyable, and results driven.
Incorporating creative techniques like under-eye hydration with silicone patches not only elevates your treatments but also reinforces the value of professional care. Your clients will leave feeling cared for, glowing, and confident—and isn’t that what we’re all about?
So, the next time you’re crafting a treatment, think about how you can weave hydration into the experience. It’s the gift that keeps on giving—for your clients’ skin and your business alike.
Contribution by Tiffany Underwood
Tiffany became an esthetician in October of 2022 after dealing with a horrible case of cystic acne that was not responding to medications or topicals. Tiffany felt terrible and didn’t like looking in the mirror!
She found help from a virtual consultation with an esthetician in Seattle. Raeann Kelly was amazing and helped her skin get back on track. After a new-found confidence, Tiffany thought what better way to help others with the same acne issues than becoming an esthetician? She felt a huge nudge to do it and hoped her background would help and it did. She didn’t tell anyone that she applied to an esthetics school that was an hour away from her home until she was accepted.
Then life threw Tiffany a curve ball. She was diagnosed with Hairy Cell Leukemia on June 8, 2022, but she still graduated from esthetics school on August 2, 2022. Her last chemotherapy treatment was on September 6, 2022. This experience drove her to start Tiff-Tiff’s Chemo Bags, which became a registered official 501(c)(3) nonprofit on November 22, 2022. Then In February of 2023, she founded SkinCo, which has four treatment rooms and a team of two.
