Getting an acne client clear is a big deal.
But here’s the thing nobody tells you about clear skin: the client immediately finds something else to talk about.
Once the breakouts are under control, the conversation can quickly shift to texture. Fine lines. Uneven tone. Post-acne concerns. Suddenly, the client who spent months laser-focused on getting rid of acne is looking in the mirror thinking, “Okay, now what are we doing about this?”
For acne-prone clients, that next chapter can get complicated. Many traditional age-management products were not necessarily formulated with their breakout history in mind.
That is precisely the space Face Reality® is targeting with its brand-new Age Adaptive Clearing Serum, a multi-layered retinoid serum clinically tested and formulated specifically for acne-prone, aging skin.
And one number immediately got our attention: 97% of participants reported clearer skin after 12 weeks.
So naturally, we had questions.
We reached out to Stephanie Criscione, Senior Director of Education & Acne Clinic for Face Reality®, to dig into why Face Reality® created the serum, what makes its ingredient technology different, and why the brand believes treating acne and addressing visible signs of aging no longer need to be two completely separate conversations.
The Face Reality® Client Got Clear. Now What?
Face Reality® has built much of its professional reputation around helping estheticians guide clients through the acne journey. L+A has previously explored the Face Reality® Clear Skin Method and how its adaptive approach combines professional treatments, customized home care, and ongoing adjustments.
But clearing acne does not freeze a client in time.
Stephanie says the inspiration for the new serum came from paying attention to what clients started asking after they got clear.
“Getting clear is obviously a huge milestone, but especially with our adult clients, they’re usually not saying, ‘Great, I’m clear, that’s it, I’m done.’”
Instead, new priorities emerge.
“They start asking different questions because they’re noticing texture, fine lines, or uneven tone, and they want to know what they can do to address those concerns without disrupting skin clarity,” Stephanie explains.
That is particularly relevant for professionals building long-term relationships with acne clients. We recently explored this exact evolution in our article about acne specialization and the post-clear skin journey.
The goal is no longer simply getting clear. It is figuring out what comes next without undoing everything that got the client there.
Age Adaptive Clearing Serum Is Designed to Work on Three Levels
This is where the formulation gets interesting.
Face Reality® describes Age Adaptive Clearing Serum as a multi-layered retinoid serum because the formula is designed to address the skin at three distinct levels: on the surface, within the pore, and over time.
On the Surface: Mandelic + Lactic Acids
The formula combines 5% L-mandelic acid and 2% lactic acid to provide surface exfoliation and help improve the appearance and feel of the skin.
Mandelic acid should already be a familiar face to many acne professionals. No introduction necessary. It practically has its own chair in the treatment room.
Here, however, the acids become part of a larger strategy that simultaneously addresses texture and visible age-related concerns while respecting the client’s acne history.
In the Pore: 2% Salicylic Acid
The serum also contains 2% salicylic acid, allowing the formula to continue working within the pore and helping maintain clear skin.
This is an important distinction because Age Adaptive Clearing Serum is not simply an age-management serum that happens to be appropriate for some acne clients. It is an acne treatment designed with the needs of breakout-prone skin incorporated into the formulation itself.
Over Time: A Different Approach to Retinoids
Then we get to the retinoid.
And this is where Face Reality® starts flexing some formulation muscle.
Meet β-ret Technology™
Face Reality® developed a patent-pending proprietary complex called β-ret Technology™, combining 2% salicylic acid with oleyl adapalenate, also known as Adapinoid®.
Stephanie describes oleyl adapalenate as a third-generation retinoid derivative with a fatty-acid ester structure designed to release and penetrate more gradually than more traditional retinoid approaches.
Why does that matter?
Because Face Reality® was not trying to create the skincare equivalent of kicking down the front door.
“With acne and acne-prone clients, we’re not looking for the most aggressive retinoid experience possible,” Stephanie explains. “We want consistent renewal and resurfacing that doesn’t cause irritation, so the client stays compliant and continues seeing great results.”
That philosophy also reflects something L+A has repeatedly seen while speaking with Face Reality® Acne Experts. Successful acne treatment is rarely about throwing everything at the skin. It is about controlled progression, reassessment, and knowing when to adjust. Our recent interview with Face Reality® Acne Expert Mia Pratt explored how that structured approach can completely change the way an esthetician evaluates and manages acne.
But Acids + Retinoid? Everybody Remain Calm.
We know what some of you are thinking.
Salicylic acid. Mandelic acid. Lactic acid. Retinoid.
In one serum?
Stephanie says tolerability was a major consideration during development.
“When you hear retinoid, AHAs and salicylic acid in the same formula, the immediate question is inevitably, ‘Is this going to be too much?’”
The formulation uses the slower, more gradual delivery of oleyl adapalenate alongside lower percentages of mandelic and lactic acids. Face Reality® also incorporated potassium azeloyl diglycinate, succinic acid and xylitol for additional skin-supporting benefits.
The product sheet specifically describes the formula as designed to be less irritating than traditional retinoids while supporting clear skin, cellular renewal, and early signs of aging.
Still, this is not permission to unleash every active in the bathroom cabinet.
Stephanie recommends gradually introducing Age Adaptive Clearing Serum and increasing frequency according to the skin’s response, while keeping the surrounding routine relatively simple with an appropriate cleanser, moisturizer, and daily sunscreen.

Who Is the Ideal Client?
Interestingly, Stephanie does not define the ideal client by age.
She defines them by where they are in their acne journey.
“I’m thinking much more about the client who’s clear or almost clear and asking, ‘Okay, what’s next?’”
That client might still experience occasional breakouts or congestion, but acne is no longer their only concern. Texture, fine lines, and other visible signs of aging have entered the chat.
For moderate to severe inflammatory acne, Stephanie stresses that Age Adaptive Clearing Serum is not intended to suddenly replace a client’s existing clearing program or benzoyl peroxide when that is appropriate.
That distinction is important.
This is progression, not replacement.
It is also consistent with what Certified Acne Experts have told us about the Clear Skin Method. In our profile of Kimberly Miller and her Face Reality® acne practice, customization and gradual acclimation based on the client’s response were central to her approach.
About That 97%…
Now for the number we promised we’d come back to.
In a 12-week clinical study involving 29 adults with mild acne, 97% reported clearer skin after 12 weeks while using Age Adaptive Clearing Serum with a standardized non-medicated cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. Acne severity was evaluated by a board-certified dermatologist. Individual results can, of course, vary.
There was also a separate eight-week study involving 31 acne-prone adults using the serum with Face Reality® Barrier Balance Creamy Cleanser, Barrier Care Gel Cream and powerMineral SPF 50. In that study, 93% reported smoother skin, while 94% showed clinical improvement in fine lines and wrinkles.
That combination is what Stephanie found particularly compelling.
“People with acne-prone skin shouldn’t have to choose between staying clear and addressing how their skin is aging.”
Face Reality® Is Expanding the Acne Conversation
That may ultimately be the most interesting part of this launch.
The industry loves a category. Acne goes over here. Age management goes over there. Sensitive skin gets another shelf entirely. Meanwhile, actual clients have the audacity to show up with multiple concerns at once.
As Stephanie puts it, a 35-, 45- or 55-year-old with acne-prone skin is not looking in the mirror and neatly separating concerns into marketing categories.
“They’re looking in the mirror and seeing all the things!”
Exactly.
Age Adaptive Clearing Serum represents an interesting evolution of the Face Reality® philosophy because it asks a different question. Instead of only asking how to get acne clients clear, it asks how skincare professionals can continue supporting them once they are.
That feels particularly relevant as Face Reality® continues expanding its education, product technology, and professional community. As CEO Jeremy Soine recently told L+A in our conversation about the future of professional acne skincare, the brand’s focus increasingly extends beyond clearing the initial breakout to supporting professionals and their clients over the longer skincare journey.
Clear skin, apparently, isn’t the end of the story.
It might just be where the really interesting skincare begins.
