Dr. Chantal Lunderville on Longevity and the Medical + Spa Skin Care Industry
L+A reached out to Dr. Chantal Lunderville, Board Certified Physician, Medical Director, and Luxury Events Founder, and asked her to weigh in on what longevity means to her
“I remember when I was a family medicine doctor at the time that a 45-year-old woman came into my office feeling exasperated that all her labs and testing had come back normal, yet she still felt fatigued, run-down, and like something was “off”. As much as I wanted to help her, I was limited in what I knew how to do. I could offer medications and some short-lived emotional support. It wasn’t until much later in my career that I was able to see where we fall short in the healthcare system.
It wasn’t until after leaving general practitioner care and becoming a medical director for holistic practices and medical spas, that I realized the missing link. In my new roles, I was able to start helping women feel their most confident selves, rather than just rule out that something was “wrong with them”. I began to see the spa industry as part of what healthcare should give us – rather than what it often does not! It should give us a sense of community, care, respite, recovery, ancient healing arts, nervous system regulation, and so much more.
I began to research longevity and read books about the Blue Zones, biohacking, hormonal health, and balancing, as well as optimizing our environment to avoid chemicals, all of which I never learned in medical school. Later, I would throw health events on these topics to help women of all ages learn together in a fun and safe environment.
One of the biggest lessons I emphasize to patients is that their environment matters. I teach them to get curious about everything they’re breathing in, putting on their body, and eating. I also teach that a sense of connectedness improves longevity, whether that is through getting a massage in nature or seeing your favorite aesthetician and feeling that dopamine surge at your monthly facial, or joining a walking group.
I’m very passionate that wellness is what our communities really need beyond access to basic medical care.
